Out-of-Gauge (OOG) cargo is freight that exceeds the standard dimensions of a shipping container. Also known as oversized cargo, these shipments
require specialized transportation equipment, route planning, and permit coordination to ensure safe and compliant delivery.

Common examples of OOG cargo include industrial machinery, construction equipment, generators, transformers, steel products, aircraft components, and other project cargo that cannot be transported inside a standard container.

Step Deck Trailer
A step deck trailer is commonly used for oversized freight, such as:

• Industrial machinery
• Steel products
• Pipes
• Lumber
• Large crates
• Manufacturing equipment
• Generators
• Air compressors

Typical capacity:
Up to 45,000 lbs
Cargo height up to approximately 10’8″

Lowboy Trailer
A lowboy trailer is designed for heavier and taller oversized cargo, including:

• Excavators
• Bulldozers
• Wheel loaders
• Cranes
• Transformers
• Heavy construction equipment

Typical capacity:
Over 50,000 lbs
Ideal for cargo over 11 ft tall (up to approximately 12’4″ on the trailer deck).

Out-of-Gauge cargo can move internationally using several shipping methods depending on its dimensions.

• Flat Rack Containers – Ideal for cargo that exceeds the width or height of a standard container.
• Open Top Containers – Designed for cargo loaded from above because of its height.
• Breakbulk Cargo – Oversized freight loaded individually onto a vessel rather than inside a container.

These shipping methods are widely used for import and export cargo moving through the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, supporting industries such as construction, manufacturing, mining, aerospace, and energy.
